The tech department logo video tutorial published a few weeks ago provided some useful feedback. The original design uses the original “Swoosh” design. The following tutorial will demonstrate some other uses of the same design method. Here is the example, please enjoy!
Fire up Adobe Photoshop and let’s begin!
1. Create a new canvas: File > New

2. Select the Elliptical Marquee Tool

3. Create a a new layer (Ctrl+Shift+N) and draw a nice oval marquee within that layer on the canvas

4. Fill with a color of your choice using the Paint Bucket tool (for this demonstration we will use a darker blue #0033CC)

5. Deselect the marquee by selecting the Elliptical marquee tool and clicking on the moving lines aka “marching ants”

6. Select the Elliptical Marquee tool again and draw an oval with a smaller width but a similar heighth than our original in the same layer.

When you find the ellipse you like hit the Delete key on your keyboard and deselect the marching ants.

7. Rotate the Oval slightly by clicking Edit > Transform > Rotate and apply the rotation by clicking the move tool and confirming the change.

8. Select the Rectangular Marquee Tool and place a square around the right “swoosh” and Copy it (Ctrl+C or Edit>Copy) and hit the Delete key.

9. Create a new layer and paste our copied “swoosh” into it. This is what your layers window should look similar to:

10. Create a Gradient Overlay for the Right “swoosh” by double-clicking on the layer name to open the Layer Style window and selecting Gradient Overlay. If you choose to you can also add a Bevel and Emboss to give it a more 3D feel. Fill in with the following properties:

Note: We want the gradient to have a -90 degree angle. Don’t click OK yet! Place an outer glow with a gray color:

Optional: Bevel and Emboss

11. Repeat step 10 for the “SwooshLEFT” layer, but make sure the gradient angle is 90 degrees.
12. Add your department text and necessary effects!

W/O Inner Bevel
