Recent News: The DSC Show will return August 2nd, 2010 to 100.7 JACK FM!

San Diego's popular morning radio show, the DSC, will not continue into 2010 after contract negotiations failed with the KGB radio station.

Update: 6/06/10

More than five months since I wrote this article and still no DSC in San Diego. With Clear Channel owning all the stations in town it looks like there's not much of a chance of the DSC reappearing in SD anytime soon. News about there whereabouts? Beats me... If you know something comment below.

Update: 1/15/10

I have not heard a thing yet from the DSC and my drive to work sucks listening to music. Anyways, I will probably not update as often on this post until I hear any news. If you hear some please leave a comment or contact me!

Update: 1/12/10

Looks like there's a few people doing a rally over at the Clear Channel in San Diego on Wednesday January 13th (tomorrow). If you choose to support this, then here's a map to the Clear Channel office:

DLOCC doesn't know who to support in this debate... the DSC or KGB? I'm not a big fan of Clear Channel though.

Update: 1/11/10

A few more interesting comments below, but no more news from Dave and co. Anybody hear anything? If you have, please post it or contact me and send me the link.

Update: 1/8/10

Coe Lewis stopped by the site today and left a comment below, check it out... I think she makes a good point.

No significant news as of today. Will there be a DSC? Are they leaving San Diego, retiring? Where's Emily and Ruth?

I can see from your comments that you're equally as confused.

Update: 1/7/10

Rickards told NBC San Diego he was notified of the DSC show's cancellation over the weekend.

“We want to be on KGB,” he said. “We want to finish our careers there. We hope that can still happen, but that looks unlikely.”

Update: 1/6/10

There's been more news released today about the DSC show being San Diego's latest morning radio crew casualty.

Please read about it here at Sign on San Diego. Currently, it is the most popular article on the website. This just goes to show how popular the DSC was in San Diego. Also, on my website this article has received a lot of attention.

There is still no comment or statement from either Dave, Shelly or Chainsaw.

It also looks like someone updated the DSC Show Wikipedia page with past tense refences... how sad.

Update: 1/4/10

The shows cast included Dave Rickards, Shelly Dunn and Cookie "Chainsaw" Randolph and has been on the air in San Diego for more than 20-years. Other cast members are Chris Boyer, Emily Maguire and "Ruth 66" whose real name is Nina Rheba.

Rickards, the show's founder, has yet to release a statement on the matter (that I have seen). KGB on the other hand has posted the following state and taken down the DSC website, all images and references to the show and looks to be done with negotiations.

Statement from 101KGB
After extensive negotiations. and offering the DSC team a very lucrative, multi-year offer, we were unfortunately not able to reach an agreement to keep the show with KGB. We wish Dave, Shelly and Chainsaw all the best in their future pursuits and thank them for their contribution to the station. KGB has had a special relationship with listeners in San Diego as the leading Classic Rock station for many years. We look forward to continuing that tradition.

As an avid listener of the show, I can't say I'm surprised. A couple of months ago Dave shared with his audience the facts surrounding the his show's layoff. He has always been straightforward with the listeners. Did he see this coming? If so, why not mention it? This economic downturn has hit every industry, including KGB radio station owner Clear Channel. Is money that tight there that they couldn't meet the DSC's requests? Or were their requests too much to ask for?

Lots of questions and no answers

This afternoon Coe Lewis cried on air about how she's losing her friends and KGB loves it's listeners and San Diego and we'll always be for you... blah blah blah. Who are you anyways? The only reason I ever turn on KGB is for the DSC anyways. Oh yeah, unless I want to hear Stairway to Heaven, which is played probably no less than 20 times every 4-hours.

Growing up in San Diego, I have always enjoyed listening to this show on the way to work. I am confident that another local station will jump on the opportunity to bring the DSC show on board.

The Dave Shelly and Chainsaw Radio Show Off the Airwaves

Tell me what you think? Do you think the KGB is being a penny-pinching stickler or is it the DSC crew who are wanting more money and less B.S.? Leave a comment below or contact me.

Sorry, No related posts. But Please keep cruisin' the site!

  2. What the hell happened? The DSC is the only reason i listen to the radio, someone needs to tell Dave to get his crew back, either on radio, internet or satellite radio.

  4. The only reason i tuned in to kgb was because of DSC, now i will no longer do. I hope the cowards at clear channel responsable for this sink kgb into low shares hell, and then all their jobs will be in risk because of their inabilaty to pay for their talent. Keep me updated to DSC new home, ill lisen and consume their sponsors products.

  5. Like the others the only reason that I ever turned on KGB was to listen to the DSC. I have been listening to the DSC for almost 10 years now and miss them dearly.

I just hope that they will find another station to pick them up.

  6. Just my opinion….
KGB is screwed without the DSC show.

Dave’s a smart guy and I don’t think he is quite ready to retire. If Dave wasn’t working an angle he would have been all over the media. The DSC show will be back. I listened to the show long enough to know Dave’s wheels are turning.

Don’t let us down DSC. San Diego want you back!!!

  8. The biggest thing that is killing me is the not knowing. Don’t know what the future is for the DSC. Don’t know if there is a future for the DSC. There are too many things that we don’t know. I wish someone would tell us if DSC intends to try again somewhere else, or if they are just going to hang it up.

  9. As others, only tuned to KGB for the DSC. However don’t know any of the details and we never will.. The DSC was ‘KGB” no doubt about it and if the station was attempting to gouge them to increase their profit SHAME ON THEM… At the same time if the DSC team was attempting to line their pockets during these depressed times them SHAME ON THEM.. We will never know…..

  10. Hi Devin, I read your comments about me and I just needed to say a few things and clarify a few. You ask “who am I anyways”. Well, I am someone who has been on the air at that station for over 20 years. I am someone who is very passionate about what I do. I am also a very loyal friend to DSC. I appreciate their genius, their friendship, and comraderie. And fyi, I was the person who showed Rickards the ropes in the studio when he got to town. And yeah, I cried. Why wouldn’t I? I have lost working with some of the most gifted people to crack a mic. I have seen the industry change dramatically and blow out friends left and right. So when you write something…you might want to check some facts out. I appreciate that the emotions have been dramatic with this event. Bryan and I took the front line of blows at KGB and it was brutally rough. So please, remember I am human being with feelings…and when you say something callous like that…it hurts. Regards, Coe

  11. @Coe Lewis,

Please let me say that clarify that when I wrote this post I was still on my emotional “WTF is going on, why is the DSC off the air?” rage/tantrum/mindset and your on-air comments just got wrapped up in the whole post. I do appreciate you coming onto my site and making your voice heard. It shows that you do really care about both the DSC and KGB radio station. Undoubtedly you’ve seen and bared the brunt of the DSC cancellation backlash and I don’t mean to make that any harder on you or Bryan. I’m really surprised how much response this blog post has gotten, it’s amazing.

  12. DSC is the best thing that happen to KGB, I have been a loyal listener for over 20 years of KGB. After finding out that DSC is no longer on the show I have lost all reason to listen to KGB. (BRING BACK DSC) They are why KGB is so popular…

  13. Hey Devin, no worries. To say this week was emotional could be the understatement of the 2000′s. I just felt you threw me under the bus for something I had nothing to do with. I have read a couple of posts here and there about things I allegedly “said” that were so inaccurate…I was starting to doubt my sanity?? Literally, Bryan and I were gutted this week. Stress was in overdrive.
But you know, I am just so lucky that I got to work with such amazingly talented people…wow. All I know is whatever they set their sights on….they will simply knock it out of the park with the effort of a single. That is how good they are.

Anyway, thanks Devin for letting me say my piece. I appreciate it…best always, Coe

  14. This is an utter shame. The DSC was the best morning show in San Diego, bar none. They were also a huge contributor to this community. Always helping out were they could with the money earned from CD & DVD sales, Strong supporters of our men and women in the military, and some of the best interviews and guests of any show.
Hell, instead of being let go they should have been given a larger audience.
Anyway, I’m done with KGB, and I’ve been a listener not just since the begining of the DSC but for over 30 years.

  15. Calling clear channel will do no good. The way to do it is to listen to KGB in the morning, write down all of their advertisers, and call THEM. Tell them you will not buy any of their products or services until DSC is back or they quit advertising on KGB.

  16. I’ve been listening since the Dawn Patrol days. My mornings have a big gaping hole in them now. I’m listening to a COUNTRY station for Pete’s sake!

Clear Channel needs to pull their heads outta their behinds. DSC are worth what they ask for. They were the ONLY reason I listened to KGB.

Look around San Diego. Which morning show has fans loyal enough to put bumper stickers on their cars?

Sorry, Coe, no offense, but I’m with Devon. I just can’t take the Led Zep every other song. And Black Sabbath actually did one or two songs besides Paranoid…

    Hey Boyer… Let’s go fishin’! :-)

  17. This axing of DSC & Mikey, it smacks to me of Clear Channel’s “bottom line”, screw the listener. I have a life, and it starts, make that started with my AM dose of comedy, via DSC & The Mikey Show. All I’m saying is, Clear Channel your even more funny, not.

  18. GET LOST: I have listened to DSC ever sine I moved here in 1996. I’ve found them to be topical, convivial, and funny. Great chemistry and good for a laugh. At least, that’s the impression I received as a listener. Then, about 2 months ago, I sent them an email registering a complaint that they were getting too political (they were mired in a “health care legislation” rant). My complaint wasn’t angry. In fact, I think I wrote “Hey! You’re putting us to sleep.” I was surprised that i received a reply from Dave himself. I was even more surprised at the sharp tone of his reply: “If you don’t like it, get lost!” Needless to say, I was thrown off. Such arrogance! I think Dave was getting too cocky. He kept having his wife Nicole call in to treat all of us to another update on lifestyles of the rich and famous. I really tired of her stories about their horses, her riding competitions, their latest vacations, her convertible… this was not wise programming given the state of the economy. What listener, barely making it paycheck-to-paycheck wants to hear about their restaurant service in Hawaii, her trip to Europe, or her trainer’s regimen? I thought Boyer was getting too creepy, his right-wing tirades getting more outrageous and threatening to the President. What I’m saying is that, though I will miss them, I’m pretty sure we will all do fine without them. Maybe Dave can take this time to get anger management, Boyer can get back on his meds, and Nicole can get a real job. They can, to quote someone we know… “get lost”.

  19. I just sent the following email to lisacdollinger@clearchannel.com:

“I write in order to request that you bring back the Dave, Shelly, and Chainsaw show on 101.5 KGB FM in San Diego. They were the only reason I listened to FM radio. If I want to listen to music, I just play the music on my Iphone. I will be contacting your advertisers and ask that they not advertise on your stations until the DSC show is put back on the air. I wonder how your Arbitron ratings are now that the DSC is off the air? I bet the ratings are almost nonexistent.”

Hope they put the DSC back on the air soon!

  20. On Wednesday, January 13th at 7am, join your fellow listeners in a united show of support in front of Clear Channel Communications to show our extreme loyalty to the DSC! We need to have a huge turnout for this to be successful, so let’s show Clear Channel, San Diego, and the rest of the world how much we care about Dave, Shelly, Chainsaw, Boyer, Emily, and Ruth 66!

Remember, we have no budget, so bring your own signs, banners, and loud voices. Bring a friend or two as well. Bring mom, dad, the kids, and the family dog!

  21. I listened to the DSC show in the morning and at night, always. Occasionally they would go on political discussions that bored me, but about 95% of the time they were witty and amusing. I miss them as if they were friends and (sorry Coe) I don’t ever listen to that station now.

  23. I have thought long and hard about how to address the DSC no longer being on the air. The feeling I get is that a long time friend has died. It really is that bad. I would like to say that the DSC had a hand in raising me (to the pure joy of my father and the resounding dismay of my mother). I had listened every morning religiously since 1996. In fact, one of the most memorable days in my life involved the DSC… I can remember vividly the morning of 9/11 waking up, as usual, to the DSC playing on my alarm clock and in the groggy state of half sleep, hearing the play by play of the first plane hitting the WTC from Dave and the gang. I can remember thinking “man that sounds like a great movie, wonder when it will come out” in the early minutes of the conversation. After about 10 minutes I began to realize what was really going on. That is just one of the examples of the enormous role the DSC has played in my life and not having them around is unexplainable. The mornings are not the same anymore… all the coffee pots on earth may as well have vanished and the effect would be the same. I miss everyone dearly and everyone on the show for the last 15 years will always hold a very special place in my heart. I cannot wait for the DSC to announce that they will broadcast from their garage or something… we have to get our daily dose of DSC somehow. To the KGB: it is truly their loss… there is no reason for me to listen to the KGB anymore. I used to listed to 103.3 in Temecula at the start of my commute and switch over to KGB in Escondido and then do the same on the way home for an average of 3 or 4 hours a day. Now I’m stuck listening to AJ or JohnJay and Rich… this sucks! To Dave and the gang: Please create a place where we can all get back together… an internet show, facebook/myspace page, sattelite radio, something. And keep us updated! Love your show!

  24. When I got in my car on the 4th, I thought my radio was broken. I was shocked to hear… MUSIC!!! Like so many others, I have been listening to DSC since they were the Dawn Patrol.
For Christmas I got a new phone, which allowed me to download the show. I was lucky enough to have figured out how to get the last taping before they were taken off the air, and off the internet.
I realize that DSC owns the rights to the show itself, and the broadcasts stay with them. However, now I can only hold on to the Best Of CD’s, and that cherished last day on air. I am going through withdrawls.
I hope that DSC will prevail and be back on the air soon. There are many of us out here that will not listen to KGB until their return. We keep our fingers crossed.
I will also be sending an e-mail to the station. I hope it helps.

  25. Bottom line again is management, at the top is not in tune with with reality. We see it way to often at the working mans/ woman’s level. This is a chance for a large compony to listen, for a change to The people that they call there listeners and bring back a morning show that we the listeners want and like. If it’s about the money; think of the amount you stand to loose when your listeners stop listening or you see the ratings of your rival radio station take off because they picked up the DSC. Do Not Run your compony like it’s the government……..Out of tune with the people.

  26. I’m amazed that we still haven’t heard a thing from anyone on the DSC. In my search for a morning replacement I came across some other show that shares the same building (the Mikey show or something) and they had Sara on. She was talking about her mother trapped in Haiti and casually mentioned that she hadn’t joined her mother on the trip because she didn’t think she could get the time off with the DSC so soon after Christmas. It was a casual fleeting reference and that is the only thing I’ve heard since it happened. Seems like there should be more of an impact but I guess that is how we always feel when we lose something important. We want our grief to be the biggest drama in the world. *sigh* Still it would be great closure to hear something from the DSC themselves.

  27. I have been a listener of the DSC for as long as I can remember. As I grew older, my kids would turn to the DSC and enjoyed it as much as I did. No reason to go channel sufing while in the car. When my daughter was sent to Iraq, I would send tapes and CD’s from the DSC. Now they are gone and I have turned to CD’s and AM talk radio. I will miss the DSC, their contributions to the community, their antics, but mostly I will miss feeling the pulse of our community, San Diego, as I listen to thier show 2X a day and on weekends. How can the sponsors stick with Clear Channel now?

  28. The DSC lost its edge about 10 years ago. Except for the dean of sports, the rest of the show is half-assed. Dave makes no effort anymore, and besides chainsaw, the rest have no talent at all.
Its time for them to move on.

  29. Yes this has been a sad couple of weeks. I too have been listening since the Dawn Patrol days. I will never forget some of their greatest moments, such as the shuttle landing, and naked skydiving. I am sure the DSC is asking for a huge contract, but have they not earned it? I think so. I know these are tough times, but I can’t see them getting any better for Clear Channel by letting one of their top shows get away. Especially if they get on a competing station! However I think and certainly hope the management of Clear Channel knows the business better than most of us, so there is likely things going on we all don’t know about. I however don’t see any reason to listed to KGB anymore, except when Coe is on! I have been a fan of Coe for a long time, I started listening to her back when Sue was on the show. I still have their poster! I am not able to listen to the radio after 6am at work, but I really liked downloading the podcasts and listening later, or catching the “Best of”.

Sue hang in there, we all still love you, and maybe we will all get lucky and find DSC back on KGB. I would only hope that their silence is due to further negotiations with KGB.

But after awhile they started to get perdicable with Dave is allways right Bromo being allways dumb,ect.ect.ect.We started to listening to The Walrus and started hearing more clastic old rock and hardly any repetes and no arguments between jocks. We all will remember d.s.c. but maybe its time to move on to better music which is the main reson i listen to The Walrus 105.7 FM.PEACE.boz

  31. I too am a (extremely) long time listener to KGB (remember when it was 13K on the AM dial?). I also remember when “Dave and Chainsaw” left KGB before, taking the newsperson “Shelley” (who was not yet a full member of the team) with them to another station in the north county. The advertisement campaign to bring them back was one of the best I’ve ever seen (“NO ONE leaves the KGB!) Hopefully it can happen again… but I wouldn’t count on it.

Clearwater has not been exceptionally kind to San Diego’s fav DJs since it took the helm at KGB. Coe fills in and I was never sure when to hear her wonderful voice consistently anymore. I still miss Jim McInnes (his traffic reports on another station in the afternoon are just not enough ) who Clearwater let go even though he had been with KGB for nearly 30 years, just to try for a younger demographic. Make sure to note that no one who has taken his “slot” has lasted for very long…

DSC has been a part of my life. Dave’s girls are in the same age range as my girls, so I feel for their dad’s trials and tribulations. My heart broke at the announcement of Beth’s death. I’ve enjoyed every moment of Shelley’s hunt for Mr. Right. etc, etc, etc…. We are all there, we all care, and that won’t change the bottom line.

In the end, money will be the determining factor… How much money Clearwater is willing to spend (or lose as a “loss-leader”) to keep the audience it feels its advertisers are targeting, and how much DSC is willing to settle for. Radio listeners are switching to their iPods and advertisers want to see results for their dollars. Clearwater is the epitome of the mega multi-station, and is going to continue make its decisions monetarily. In a time of tight budgets, there is no question that the DSC, with all its ancillary members, is a much more expensive show than just one Coe Lewis (or anyone else) playing music and reporting news for the morning commute.

Clearwater likely sees it as a net dollar gain, even if they do lose listeners : (

  34. I must admit with “get lost” to some extent. Boyer had definitely slid over to the darkside and often was a big detractor on the show and I never thought Ruth added substance, but I’ve listen to DSC for many years and like everyone else, felt confused and lost that first day back after the new year. I initially thought my son had changed my preset!!! I’m very disappointed that we haven’t heard anything from any of them about plans or new location or just a friendly “Thanks for all the ears all these years”!!! How about DSC?

  35. Wow. I haven’t had a chance to listen for a while, but I was always guaranteed a laugh from the DSC. I was totally surprised when I logged onto the website and was puzzled that nowhere could I find references to DSC, WTF?

Sad, but I guess it goes along with the industry. I have seen a lot of popular morning radio jocks get canned at the top of their game for what seems like no good reason, but who knows what happens behind closed doors.

Dave, Shelly, and Chainsaw: I miss you already. Hofefully you’ll wind up on another online station which I will gladly port my ears over to.

  46. The DSC became the only reason to tune into KGB. You can only take so much Bad Company, Doors, Led Zeppelin, etc ….. They were very entertaining, not to mention very generous with their cd’s and dvd’s helping those San Diegan’s in need. Since I moved away I’ve always looked forward to what they would put out at the end of the year and so I went online to see what they were working on this year, and wtf? ….unbefuckingleevable, they are gone. I am sad.
