Web designers beware that if you’re eager to use @font-face in the near future you can forget it! With Google now entering the web-font market the guys over at font-face.com decided it was a lost cause to continue on their noble quest. Personally, I would be rather upset if I had invested 100s of hour of labor just to be overtaken by a giant. Hopefully Google will kick them over some pity capital.

Although we have put 100′s of hours into the design, development and readying of 150+ fonts (x4 formats = 600!), with only weeks before font-face.com was ready to go live, we have decided to bow out now. A bitter blow to the team.

Here’s the whole @font-face announcement:

Our Google Announcement

Google have recently announced that they are also entering the web-font market – with the same free, hosted model as ours.

Although we have put 100′s of hours into the design, development and readying of 150+ fonts (x4 formats = 600!), with only weeks before font-face.com was ready to go live, we have decided to bow out now. A bitter blow to the team.

Our decision has not been easy. Although we feel we would offer a better service, we would after all be competing with Google. A massive might to compete with.

The last thing we would want is to host fonts for everyone to link to, only to at some point (after google have beaten us) be forced to turn them off – destroying your website designs.

So as not do disappoint you in the future, we have decided to stop now. Have no fear though – we will be back! We are hatching a new plan for font-face.com – stay tuned!

font-face.com will still be the home of everything font-face, just not in the original way it was intended.

Thanks

The font-face.com Team x x

It looks more and more that Google’s Font Directory will be the way more and more web designers will go for web-fonts. Right now the library only consists of 30 or so fonts but I imagine this will grow quickly. Sorry @font-face, I really wanted to start using you! Cool site though, simple and to the point. Check out font-face.com to get updates from their team. They say they currently are hatching up something new for the web. They managed to make quiet an impression this first go around until Google had to come in an flex their muscle.

Apple’s largely hyped iPad will not support the Flash plugin on it’s built-in Safari browser. This means there will be no free Flash games, videos or music on the Apple iPad. Instead, the Safari browser will show the missing plugin icon when an iPad user attempts to access a website that is Flash enabled.

The topic has been widely since the iPad, then dubbed ‘apple tablet’, rumors first began to swirl. During Apple’s “Latest Creation” unveiling Steve Jobs demonstrated browsing the Internet on the iPad. When he encountered Flash on the New York Times’ website he quickly stated:

No flash here… the missing plugin icon is on screen.” – Steve Jobs

Update: Adobe Announces Flash Apps Will Run On The iPad, Even Full Screen At Some Point

The iPad and Flash debate has been a widely debated topic between tech bloggers. Some Apple fans think they are doing the right thing by snubbing Adobe’s Flash. Others think that Apple is doing the right thing. Myself, I <3 Flash but understand where Apple is coming from Flash exclusion.

iPad: No Flash? No Surprise

Apple’s iPhone never supported Flash and they have never indicated that this would change in the near future. To add to this, Apple seems to be placing more distance (if possible) between themselves and Adobe Flash. So why are some surprised? The iPad is a device that features browsing as a key element; there will be plenty of people wanting access their Flash games, video sites, music and more. Instead, they will only to be met with this frustrating (and widely-hated) icon:

Which situation do you think Apple is happier with? An iPad OS without Flash plugin support, where they control the source code to every single component, and can do whatever they want, when they want… OR… an OS with proprietary web content plugin support – Flash primarily – that brings users a much more complete Internet viewing experience but takes control away from Apple. Looks like they’ve made the decision.

iPad Shrugs Off Flash

With the majority of video on the Internet based on Flash technology, this latest revelation from Apple may limit the iPad’s richness. On the other hand, Apple may be attempting loosen the grip of this closed-door plugin has on the Internet. Will Apple be successful?

I decided to just offer up my code in a package for those who want to modify it to suit their needs. Why? Because after much deliberation, I’m moving away from the all-Flash site for a blog/flash mix site (the one you’re on now). Let me know what you think and please come back to show me the sites you make!

Summary: Here’s all the information and resources you need in order to create a fluid Flash website.

The Active Tuts Tutorial by Makzan

I also included the ‘Whimsical’ animated background effect also found here at Active Tuts

If you don’t have the font I used download it here: Airstrip Four

Download My Fluid Website

Demo My Fluid Website

View My Brief Code Walkthrough:

Also: If you are particularly good with this and want to redistribute the code in an update package then let me know. There are bugs in my code and it’s not very ‘clean’ so if you do some work on it and want to share the wealth then by all means hit me up.

Disclaimer: I did not write this entire code. DLOCC claims no ownership over the Classes used, images and MP3s and other non-original elements of this package.

Don’t forget to leave a comment! :]

When developing this website I ran into an error with my .swf logo that was causing this error in Internet Explorer: “SWFObject” is undefined. I will show you how I resolved this error, it was pretty simple.

Again, the problem at hand was that any Internet Explorer user who browsed to my site would encounter a error warning in the browser’s lower bar stating “‘SWFObject’ is undefined” and if double-clicked would see this error:

Looking at the code you can see that it says the exact line number of the problemed code. After looking into my code I noticed that the this HTML was inserting the swf into my website with the following code:

<object id="FlashID" classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000">

Next, a JavaScript code would register that object:

<script type="text/javascript"></script>

It turns out that the swfobject.js file the script above was looking is not in the same directory… therefore, the SWF was not being registered and is in turn undefined causing the “SWFObject” is undefined error in Internet Explorer. To resolve this I simple defined the path to the swfobject.js script using

<script type="text/javascript" src="path/to/swfobject.js" />

as seen here in the code:

<script src="../../../../Scripts/swfobject_modified.js" type="text/javascript"></script>

Poof! The error is gone and everything is fine, fine, fine. Let me know if this works for you or if you are having problems in the comments below. Thanks!
