The old logo’s time was up! It’s about fresh and new around here… and you can expect a lot of that coming up on this site. It’s going through a slow-but-steady makeover. First up: The DLOCC logo.

It’s Spring Cleaning around here, and that mean’s new a new logo to freshen things up around this site. We’ve been getting more traffic so it’s time to throw on our game face and make this place look ‘balleresque’ (that is a word). Let’s take a look a comparing the two logos.

Old DLOCC Logo

Please note that the logo above is meant to be on a gradient background so it looks kind of funky with a plain white background. In this logo there is a “brushed steel” effect on an orange gradient layer with rounded corners. The font used for this logo is Century Gothic and Tahoma (I fell in love with this font for a little while as you can see on this website). I created this logo in PhotoShop CS4 about 8-months ago.

New DLOCC Logo

Here’s a view of our new logo and I can say I’m quite pleased with it. I drew my inspiration from this logo after viewing some of the stuff on css-tricks.com. On there, Chris Coyier has some neat CSS-type of element in the site’s design (like brackets and asterisks). I decided it would be cool to have some curly-brackets around the CC on the logo to make it look more web dev’ish. Yaladamean?

Let me know what you think!

Fonts used for this logo: LubalGraph Md BT (logo text) and Jellyka Estrya’s Handwriting

I plan on improving one little thing on the site each day I can. As you can see each post now has a related post section at the bottom of the page! Pretty neat… FYI, to accomplish this I am using the Yet Another Related Posts Plugin
Update:

Ok I published this article like 2-minutes ago and already made a revision to the logo. All I did was stretch it out and put in a little slash. Check it out:

Recent News: The DSC Show will return August 2nd, 2010 to 100.7 JACK FM!

San Diego's popular morning radio show, the DSC, will not continue into 2010 after contract negotiations failed with the KGB radio station.

Update: 6/06/10

More than five months since I wrote this article and still no DSC in San Diego. With Clear Channel owning all the stations in town it looks like there's not much of a chance of the DSC reappearing in SD anytime soon. News about there whereabouts? Beats me... If you know something comment below.

Update: 1/15/10

I have not heard a thing yet from the DSC and my drive to work sucks listening to music. Anyways, I will probably not update as often on this post until I hear any news. If you hear some please leave a comment or contact me!

Update: 1/12/10

Looks like there's a few people doing a rally over at the Clear Channel in San Diego on Wednesday January 13th (tomorrow). If you choose to support this, then here's a map to the Clear Channel office:

[inline]

DLOCC doesn't know who to support in this debate... the DSC or KGB? I'm not a big fan of Clear Channel though.

Update: 1/11/10

A few more interesting comments below, but no more news from Dave and co. Anybody hear anything? If you have, please post it or contact me and send me the link.

Update: 1/8/10

Coe Lewis stopped by the site today and left a comment below, check it out... I think she makes a good point.

No significant news as of today. Will there be a DSC? Are they leaving San Diego, retiring? Where's Emily and Ruth?

I can see from your comments that you're equally as confused.

Update: 1/7/10

Rickards told NBC San Diego he was notified of the DSC show's cancellation over the weekend.

“We want to be on KGB,” he said. “We want to finish our careers there. We hope that can still happen, but that looks unlikely.”

Update: 1/6/10

There's been more news released today about the DSC show being San Diego's latest morning radio crew casualty.

Please read about it here at Sign on San Diego. Currently, it is the most popular article on the website. This just goes to show how popular the DSC was in San Diego. Also, on my website this article has received a lot of attention.

There is still no comment or statement from either Dave, Shelly or Chainsaw.

It also looks like someone updated the DSC Show Wikipedia page with past tense refences... how sad.

Update: 1/4/10

The shows cast included Dave Rickards, Shelly Dunn and Cookie "Chainsaw" Randolph and has been on the air in San Diego for more than 20-years. Other cast members are Chris Boyer, Emily Maguire and "Ruth 66" whose real name is Nina Rheba.

Rickards, the show's founder, has yet to release a statement on the matter (that I have seen). KGB on the other hand has posted the following state and taken down the DSC website, all images and references to the show and looks to be done with negotiations.

Statement from 101KGB

After extensive negotiations. and offering the DSC team a very lucrative, multi-year offer, we were unfortunately not able to reach an agreement to keep the show with KGB.

We wish Dave, Shelly and Chainsaw all the best in their future pursuits and thank them for their contribution to the station. KGB has had a special relationship with listeners in San Diego as the leading Classic Rock station for many years. We look forward to continuing that tradition.

As an avid listener of the show, I can't say I'm surprised. A couple of months ago Dave shared with his audience the facts surrounding the his show's layoff. He has always been straightforward with the listeners. Did he see this coming? If so, why not mention it? This economic downturn has hit every industry, including KGB radio station owner Clear Channel. Is money that tight there that they couldn't meet the DSC's requests? Or were their requests too much to ask for?

Lots of questions and no answers

This afternoon Coe Lewis cried on air about how she's losing her friends and KGB loves it's listeners and San Diego and we'll always be for you... blah blah blah. Who are you anyways? The only reason I ever turn on KGB is for the DSC anyways. Oh yeah, unless I want to hear Stairway to Heaven, which is played probably no less than 20 times every 4-hours.

Growing up in San Diego, I have always enjoyed listening to this show on the way to work. I am confident that another local station will jump on the opportunity to bring the DSC show on board.

Tell me what you think? Do you think the KGB is being a penny-pinching stickler or is it the DSC crew who are wanting more money and less B.S.? Leave a comment below or contact me.

I'm off to Costa Rica for Vacation. In a few hours I will be living the pura vida. I'm going to do my best to keep posting as my vacation goes on, we'll see how I do. Here we go!

November 14th, 2009 (6:41 pst): It's been more than 10 years since I've really traveled out of the country. By really I mean to some place other than Mexico or Canada. About a month and a half ago I booked a plane ticket to Costa Rica to visit one of my good friends from college that has been living down there and to this point it's been a major struggle to get my U.S. Passport renewed. Let me explain what I've been through in a second. First, make sure you give yourself more than 6-8 weeks if you do not have a passport and are booking your vacation out of the country. This is due to the U.S. Department of State's backlog of passport requests and I'm sure a million other reasons.

Ok, now on to the passport story. About three weeks ago (Oct. 20th or so) I realized that my passport was long expired. Of course, I went on the Internet and printed the necessary forms, looked up the local passport "Acceptance Facility" and got in my car to drive down there. Luckily, it wasn't that far since I had to make the trip a few more times. The key to getting a passport is bringing all the necessary documents such as your birth certificate and driver's license. These items I did not have and since my passport was issued to me before I was the age of 16 there was nothing I could do. I had to drive to to the San Diego County Clerk and get my birth certificate printed for about $20. After I did this I went back to the passport office and sent off my passport. But wait, check the total cost breakdown:

Passport Renewal $60

Passport ID Card $25

Expedite Fee $60 (gets you your passport in 2-3 weeks rather than the normal 6-8)

Overnight mail both ways $10Money Order (apparently only payment accepted by the post office)

Total: ~$200 give or take

Three weeks later, the week of my trip, I am waiting anxiously for my passport to come in the mail and decide it's time to call and see what's up. I mean, I can't NOT go on this vacation. It would be a pain to lose the money, but more importantly the experience. I know that my girlfriend wouldn't mind all that much though. So I look up the phone number and there's only "hotline" to call for the entire country. After calling the "Passport Hotline" numerous times and getting nothing but the "please check the number you dialed and try again" message I finally gave up for the day (later I realized it was Veterans Day).

It's not two days before my trip, and still I have no passport. I call the "passport hotline" again and this time someone anwsers. Amazingly, the person actually knew what they were doing and scheduled me an emergency appointment for the the next day at the regional passport agency... in Los Angeles. So here's the wrap up: today my girlfriend comes with me to the appointment to get the passport, they explain to me the hold up was because of a discrepency about my birthday. It was off by a day on my passport so they apparently needed to see my birth certificate to clarify the actual date. So now I find myself sitting in Coffee Bean near UCLA writing this awful post.

Hope no one reads it...

7:25pm: On the brightside I am charging my camera battery right now and will be taking lots of photos through out this trip. I will load them up as I can, who knows what the internet will be like down there.

7:28pm: I am really excited for this trip, but with only three hours of sleep last night it's kind of hard to get hyped right now. Still, pretty pumped.
