The new Aliens vs. Predator video game is set to release February 16th and will ship with three different versions – Standard edition, Survivor edition and Hunter edition. I have always been a fan of the Alien and Predator movies since I was first introduced to them as a child. Back in the day (about 10 years ago) when Aliens vs Predator 2 came out for PC it was an excellent game. Three campaign modes and online multiplayer kept me entertained for a long time.

Alien vs. Predator Video Game by Rebellion
Below are my thoughts on the new game that will be released next month in February.

After reading a few articles about the game on Gamespot and viewing the videos provided on YouTube, Aliens vs Predator looks like it will be a very promising game both for loyal fans and newcomers. Rebellion is the development company behind the game and from what they said on camera and were quoted in articles, most if not all Rebellion developers are hardcore fans of the Alien and Predator genre. In short, Rebellion reported that when they decided to make this game, they wanted to make it very bloody, very graphic, and very true to the movies. They wanted to allow the player to do whatever the alien and predator could do in the movies.

From the videos that Rebellion has released, it seems that they are carrying out their vision. It is so graphic that the game was temporarily banned in Australia. Latest news shows that the ban was overturned after the dev team stated that they would not produce a “watered down” version of their game for Australian distribution (props to them for standing behind their vision).

Predator:

The Predator looks like it will be a highly favored class to play in the game. Unlike the old game 10 years ago, the Predator now can use its ‘focus’ mode and jump from place to place quickly. The old game only allowed you to do a single high jump in addition to regular walk commands.

As a Predator, you can perform various trophy kills on different races: such as ripping of a human head with your hand and retrieving the head with the spinal column attached, choking a human and thrusting your wrist blades through its head from the bottom jaw through the top of the head, and grabbing an alien’s mini mouth and ripping it out of its head.

Hopefully there will be at least 2 different kinds of trophy kills that you can do for each race. Like the movies, the Predator has different vision modes to help see its prey. You have your normal view, thermal view, and an alien view. The Predator has its usual weapons (wrist blades, plasma cannon, mines) but I hope that the dev team puts in others as well (such as the telescoping staff, disc, and the net gun).

Alien:

Alien vs. Predator Video Game AlienThe alien has two views: standard view and a view that allows you to see in pitch black. They can cling to virtually any surface and crawl and jump around the map VERY quickly. Since you see through the eyes of the alien, crawling around walls and jumping might leave you a little disoriented, but with a little practice it wasn’t too bad playing the old game. Your weapons are: teeth, claws, and tail, which means that every kill you receive will be a close encounter. Supposedly, if you bite off the head of a human you gain back some health. In the old game if you stung your prey with your tail it would daze them and that would allow for an easier head chomp. The recent videos show that as an alien, you will be able to fully impale your enemies with your tail from behind.

Marine:

Alien Vs Predator Marine
Not too much has been shown from the Marines point of view, but this class will be the most familiar to players that have never played an AVP game before. They have mentioned that the Marine will have a motion scanner and a heavy arsenal to take down its foes. Marines are weakest from behind so it will be important to take this into account when attacking one.

Being a fan of the alien and predator genre, I have high hopes for this game. From what I have seen the game looks like it will be great and provide hours and hours of fun. But like with many games released these days, some games fall short despite all the hype. As far as multiplayer goes, as long as they balance out the three classes and have some decent maps, you will have a significant online community that will be playing this game for a long time.

The hunter edition comes with a Facehugger model, Weyland-Yutani badge and posh lenticular postcard.

  2. Right on!

This game looks great, i caught a 10 vid of a playthrough through one of the Alien campaign levels, and i gotta say the game looks terrific. A true successor to the throne of AvP gold edition.

FYI – you can expect more than 2 trophy kills per race, i’d be so bold as to say at least 5. The trophy kills seem to be different depending on your relative position in relation to the hapless individual on the buissiness end of things. Than again i could be wrong, either way, this game is gonna turn some heads.
